Access to care

It has been more than 4 years since the American Dental Association recognized orofacial pain (OFP) as a specialty in dentistry1; however, OFP remains an enigmatic or unfamiliar specialty to many dentists and other health care providers. OFP is considered pain “perceived in the face and/or the oral cavity. It may be caused by diseases or disorders of regional structures, dysfunction of the nervous system, or through referral from distant sources.”2 The services and expertise offered by the OFP specialist are apparently not clearly understood, and the specialty is significantly underused by our profession and our colleagues in medicine.
