White plaques of the oral mucosa

A 71-year-old woman reported a 1-year history of “sores and white patches on the tongue and inner cheeks with a fuzzy sensation of the mouth” and muted taste. She was examined by multiple providers, including her primary care provider and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. She was prescribed magic mouthwash (containing lidocaine, diphenhydramine, and aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide liquid) as well as clobetasol rinse and clotrimazole troches for a lichenoid reaction and candidiasis, respectively, without improvement.
