The changing face of dentistry

Our society is growing increasingly diverse, and today’s patients have a wide range of cultural identities, values, and traditions regarding oral health. Dentists leave their dental education with the groundwork for cultural competence—the act of understanding and interacting with people from cultures other than their own.1 Although we may know what different cultures are and do, we may not be engaged actively in how culture affects the approach and decision making of each patient attending our practices.
