I am writing to address specific concerns related to the characterization of sexual misconduct in a dental office and how to respond in the April 2023 Ethical Moment entitled “Sexual Harassment of Staff Members in the Dental Office: The Dentist’s Ethical Obligations” (Depp AH, Jonke G. JADA. 2023;154[4]:357-358). The article begins, “One of our patients is friendly and likes to hug when he leaves. On his recent visit, he went in for a hug with our hygienist and instead groped her breasts.” This positive framing suggests that the patient’s action was an unexpected deviation from his normal friendliness.
