A paradox for the essential activity of interprofessional practice

Every major health care organization has endorsed interprofessional practice (IPP)—the idea that people from different disciplines must work together to improve patient health.1 Yet, a paradox remains and is unlikely to be resolved any time soon; professions were created by professions not patients. A basic dynamic in health care is that it will always balance the needs of patients and practitioners.2 If we do not meet the needs of patients, we have lost the entire point of health care, but if we do not meet the needs of providers, we eventually will not have anyone willing or able to practice.
